Trick or Treating Time! city has safety tips

Kids look forward to Halloween for many reasons. They like the dressing up in costumes but the mostly they like it for the candy and treats! Who wouldn't? Even some adults still like to go our trick or treating. It makes them feel young and happy again. While this section sticks mainly to guidelines for kids, they are just as useful for adults.

The Highway Patrol is reminding all drivers and pedestrians to be extremely careful tonight in Orangeburg, SC. Small children and many pedestrians will be out and about tonight trick or treating and there is a risk of injury for those not following practical tips and guidelines for a safe Halloween.

"Trick or treat!" That's the phrase shouted with glee by many a youngster across the country every Halloween night. But before your ghosts and goblins trick or treat this year, parents should keep in mind these trick or treating safety tips to make sure the only howls are those of fun.

By Anonymous Halloween trick-or-treat hours of 5-8 pm Oct. 31 have been set for the city's neighborhoods by the East Peoria Police Department. All trick-or-treating children should be back at their homes by the 8 pm curfew.

The city also offers the following safety tips:

1.          Parents should encourage their trick-or-treaters to be especially careful after sunset. If escorting their children, parents should carry a flashlight as an additional safeguard.

2.          Residents giving out candy and treats can help prevent accidents by reminding children to be especially careful crossing streets and to walk up and down steps, instead of running.

3.          Halloween night drivers should be especially vigilant. Motorists should drive more cautiously and be prepared to stop.

4.          Refrain from crossing the street in the middle of the block or between parked cars. Cross the street only in the crosswalk or at the corner, using caution.

5.          Trick-or-treat while it’s light outside. If you must be out after dark, wear white or light-colored clothing, put reflective tape on your costume and treat bag, and carry a flashlight so you can be seen. Never carry a lit torch or candle.

6.          Dress children in non-flammable costumes that fit properly – short enough to prevent tripping. Avoid wearing masks, which obstruct vision. Use face paint and makeup instead.

7.          Trick-or-treat with friends and stay in a group; there is safety in numbers. Never trick-or-treat alone.

8.          Make sure young children are accompanied by an adult or a responsible teen, such as an older brother or sister while trick-or-treating.

9.          Advise children not to enter any residence or vehicle for the promise of anything. Children should wait outside the door for their treats.

10.     Plan your trick-or-treat route ahead of time, staying in your immediate neighborhood along well-lit streets. Do not wander far from home.

11.     Instruct children never to eat any treats until they return home and the treats have been examined under sufficient light by an adult. Check the wrappers of commercial candy for signs of tampering. Wash and cut fruit before eating. Throw away anything unwrapped. Notify the police if there are any suspicious treats.

12.     Always walk on the sidewalk while trick-or-treating. If there’s no sidewalk on the street, keep to the left, next to the curb, and walk single file facing traffic.

13.     Children should be courteous and respectful of other people's property. Damaging or defacing property will not be tolerated.

14.     Parents should know whom their children are with and which route they are taking through the area.
